The Suzhou River Cruise
The Bund Source Wharf is located north of South Suzhou Road in Huangpu District, with Zhapu Bridge upstream and Waibaidu Bridge downstream. The riverside area behind it features a waterfront green space (south bank of Suzhou River). To the east of the wharf stands the former site of a rowing club, which became the Huangpu District Swimming Pool after the liberation. Behind this area stands a two-story British-style mansion that once served as the British Consulate General in Shanghai, originally built in 1849 and being the oldest structure in the Bund architectural complex. The spired church building to the left front of the wharf was the former Xintian ‘an Church (also known as United Church), featuring a prominent 33-meter clock tower that once dominated the southern bank of Suzhou River. These three distinctively styled protected historic buildings form part of the Bund Source (Phase I), preserving 17 modern Western-style structures that mark the origin of the Bund’s “Exhibition of International Architecture” and the embryonic stage of Shanghai’s modern urban development. As the confluence of rivers and the starting/ending point of shipping routes, our boat dock here creates a dialogue corridor connecting us with the city.
